Design idea
The function we as a group chose was creative performance. We wanted to design a structure that could be use to show talents in the surrounding community such as Acting, Dancing, Musical etc. The community could use the WI-FI HUB to follow the performers, check on the next performance dates and any other information they may need. The structure was to be a multifunctional structure where other activities could take place when there are no performances. The main secondary function was to use the structure as a learning facility where lectures could be presented and research could be done for those lectures.
The shape of the structure must stand out and take form of the activities that are projected there. We decided that the form of the structure should be the shape of a loud speaker to show that the structure is like a broadcast centre.
Functional & Technology Analysis Summary
The reason why I chose the Kirstenbosch open air theatre as my functional precedent is because it provides a good viewing point and it does not limit the amount of audience within the structure which would be much more expensive as well. I also like the shape and platform size of the stage. Lectures could still be given within the structure.
As my technology precedent I chose the Helsinki stage because of the use of wood and simple materials draped over the structure which acts well for the lighting and the weather. The structure is also portable so it is easily & cheaply assembled. The structure consists of light materials and not heavy load baring materials. The draped canvas as a roof does not needing large, expensive footing/foundations.
Gum-poles can be used for structural support and cladding where the marine ply is mainly used to clad or form surfaces. The gum-poles can also span much further than the marine ply. Marine ply has water proofing capabilities and it can be shaped or bent. Both materials are treated and can withstand the rain, wind and sun. I’m going to have to find a way to waterproof the joint between the marine ply sheets if necessary.
The analysis allows my structure to form without even putting a pencil to paper. It allows it to take shape due to the requirements of the building and the materials used along with the design idea. The analysis has provided a wide variety of information used to develop the structure.
