Week 39

On Monday i received the surveyors plan for Gazet and that's changing my sections and elevations quite a bit.
I started and finished the changes for the gym in St. Georges Mall and did a few proposal layouts for the positioning of low-cost house o sites in Kaya Mandi, Stellenbosch.
On Wednesday, we went to measure up a huge manner house in Constantia which also had the biggest most amaizing garden i've ever seen. Althugh i was constantly running away from the bee-hives......
Yesterday, i started doing the council drawings for the Botha project.
And today i've been finishing that and changing a whole lot of settings on Caddie 17.
Need the weekend after this week!!!

Week 38

Right, so, this week work got more busy again...
I worked on a few alterations on older projects and drew up a floor layout for an office in Durbanville.
I started working on working drawings for the Gazet project, but that is still in early stages and im still waiting for the surveyors plans for the sections and elevations.
On Thursday, I drew up another floor layout for the Union Textile factory and on Friday I went to measure, check fire plan and the drainage of a gym in town, St. Georges Mall.

Week 37

I draughed the base drawing for a house that I also designed the master bedroom, en-suite and covered patio for. It was a nice little change for me in the office again. I really enjoyed that.
I finally finished setting up the caddie 16 setting, and now I'm working on that. I caught onto it very fast because it similar to AutoCAD, which was awesome.
I also draughted up interesting base plans for another house. It was interesting because there was a wide oval shaped staircase in the center of the house with 2 different access point on the first floor. That took a while to figure out :).
Weekend :)...!

Week 36

This week I carried on with working on office layouts for old mutual and completed 2 so far. I also coloured in the Demnits plans for council, that took a while....
I did allot of drawing and amending for office m², for client that want to rent their offices out.
I went to measure up a house in Constancia which my colleague is going to draw up... Amazing, simple little house with allot of attention payed to the detail.
I also started doing the setup for caddie 16.

Week 35

We got Caddie 16 this week which means everything is gonna be slow-mo for a while.
Loving the new program though... Especially because it has allot of AutoCAD functions :).
Well this week I worked on Demnitz the majority of the time and im very close to finishing it. Just one review by my boss and all should be good. Hoping i dont have to do a drainage section for it, because it has a really weird drainage layout with sewer pipes running allong the wall above the groud to a pump tank, because of the NGL slope.
Other than that i did a bit of office admin to get away from the Demnitz project a bit.
I also started on a new project for Old Mutual today, which consists of office layouts, sections and internal elevations. It should be an on going project with allot of different offices around SA.
It is quite interesting.

Week 34

This week I did allot of drawing up and changes on low cost housing which was drawing up a set of plans from scratch and then placing it on 102 different sites. I must admit, that was tedious.
On Tuesday, My boss sent me to measure up a house in Bishops alone. which took the whole day.
On Wednesday, I drew up the full ground floor and first floor plans of the Bishops house.
On Thursday, completed the Site plan, sections and elevations. I was quite surprised at my own time efficiency.
And today im working on Demnits council plans again... Long and boring now.
Need the weekend!!!

Week 33

This week I finished a set of council plans for the Demnitz project but its been sent to Germany for a client to see so it might still come back with changes again...
I also went to measure up and take NGL levels of the front area of a house in town and drew it up with two sections for a client that is thinking what to do with the space.
On Thursday I drew up low costs housing for persons with disabilities, which was interesting and also gave me a reason to read through the new SANS booklet.
Today I'm working on changes on 102 low-cost housing units, well starting with it anyways.
Oh yea, i almost forgot... I've been doing some advisory work for students coming in with projects and students not knowing what to study...

Week 32

Well Atlantic Centre was finished this week and sent off to the engineers and the other architectural firm. Well that’s a load off. It was a big project and everyone was putting pressure on us from all sides to get the surveying plans done.
Now I’m back to working on the Demnits project and the client is happy with the options we have shown him, so now it’s onto the council and building plans. It’s a little more detailed as it is 1:50 plans and sections.
I also spent Thursday on drawing up low cost housing from a really scruffy incorrect set of plans. It all makes sense now though J.

Week 31

I was actually glad to be back at work to finish off the Atlantic centre project. The whole week just consisted of going to measure the building every 2nd day and drawing up the building every other day. We luckily ran into the elevator maintenance guy, so I got to ride on top of the all the lifts. It was extremely helpful because, I could pick up all the beam and column thicknesses inside the lift shafts but I found it really strange that the refuse lift shaft was plastered and painted on the first 3 floors. I did allot of drilling and check measurements as the project was coming to an end. The sorting out of all the loose ends and nitty-gritties is very tedious.

Week 30

I really enjoyed Block 2. It was nice to get away from the workload and see my fellow students and lecturers again. In a nutshell, the whole week was very educational and fun. I enjoyed it all.

Week 29

This whole week was spent on measuring up the Atlantic Center in town and I'm busy drawing the sections at the same time while my colleague is working on the plans.

We are working with the engineers to find out where all the concrete supports, columns and slabs are. That is where I come in lol. I have been drilling into the walls, chipping away the plaster, finding out where there are step ups and step downs of the slab in the walls, kicking doors in, breaking down the suspended ceiling and drilling through floor slabs for the thicknesses.
As well as measuring up the whole building at the same time.
I must admit, I'm having Quite a bit of fun on the project.

Week 28

Here we go again...
On Monday and Tuesday we went to measure up the Atlantic Centre in town, which is right at the Thomas
Platulo building. The engineers want to know where the concrete framed structure lies and where the grid lines are... its gonna take a while......
On Wednesday, i had to do changes on plans for a house that is currently being built. so i must just keep the plan up to date because they are changing things on sight.
On Thursday i Placed 32 Low cost housing on their own sights with all the info and started making changes on the Caledon low cost housing units.
And today we went to take a few check measurements at the Atlantic Centre and i got to demolish suspended ceilings and doors to find out where the beams run, which was AWESOME.

Week 27

Well this week went nice an short.
All i did this week was, work on different options and materials for the 3D drawing im working on,
Converted an AutoCAD drawing to Caddie so that all the layers and line weights are right,
We went to measure up the outside area of an existing house for extentinons and
started the working drawings on the Demnitz project of which the client has made up his mind on an option with a few alterations.
:) Awesome week

Week 26

This week i did alterations on 14 different low cost housing units. The only thing i don't like about it is that i cant add it into my portfolio work.
I also worked on a site layout for a site that we will probably go and measure next week.
There were a few amendments that needed to be done on one of the older projects which i did.
I have made changes to the Meerlust project plans ( 3D project) so now I've been working on the changes on the 3D model which takes quite a bit longer to do...
Sedick is a guy that walks plans through council for my boss. I had to do quite large changes on house plans for his own house. It's quite a process, because he wants to sub-divide his site and it has a future road widening restriction, which i find very interesting so I'm going to follow up on that project.
other than that, work has picked up in the office again, which is great.
I'm just a little worried and confused about my collage work now...

Week 25

Hmmm, cant wait to go on my little holiday :).
I've been so busy again....
This week I finished the huge internal/external 3D drawing but there is already alterations so I'm going to have to change a few things.
I also finished the 3D alterations on a different project. My boss says that the client loves it :).
I've also been doing a lot of admin in the office with regards to advertising and personal letters.
We went to do some check measurements on PEP stores in town, apparently they were not happy with the square metreage that was previously measured. Turns out there's quite a large area that they are not using...
Till next week :)

Week 24

Well his should be a quick one short one.........
The only thing i have worked on in the past week is an extremely detailed 3D sketch-up drawing which i did mention last week.
In my own time I have also completed a little private job. It is just placing a 3x9m Wendy-house on a site but it has a bathroom in it so council requires the same drawings as a permanent structure. This includes Plan, Site plan, 1 x Section and 4 x Elevations.
And that was my week...

Monday, June 27, 2011

Week 23

It's been another quieter week but my bos does a good job at keeping me more than busy haha.
I finished that internal and external 3D project and did a bit of hand draughting on a set of plans which was different to what i normally do.
I also made a few changes to the new proposal of the Demnitz project as well as a bit more admin.
I'm currently working on a project that I'm really enjoying. I must design and lay out a house on a site including 3D drawing of it for estate agents. It is a proposal to help sell the site and for the house that will possibly be constructed there once sold. It is a R4.5 million site in Stellenbosch so the house is a very upmarket house.
:)

Week 22

Work has been Quite slow and dead this week but i don't mind Because then i get 3D drawings to do.
I completed two different options of the same house in 3D and I'm busy just abut to finish a 3D drawing of a different house.
Otherwise I did some admin work like, filing and organizing the mess ha ha.
We went to go measure up another house on Wednesday and was quite upset that my colleague got to draw it up.
I also did a few touch-ups on the Union Textile factory.
And that's about it
Was great to have another short week :)

Friday, June 10, 2011

Week 21

Hmmmm, this week I finished the council plans for the Union Textile factory in Maitland. Will hopefully be able to upload it by this evening.
Other than that I drew up base drawings and council drawings for a house with a few internal changes. The house was 220m² and i managed to finish everything properly within 6 houses. Chop-chop...
I also did a bit of colouring in on the factory plans.
And, aaand I just finished reveiw B options 1, 2 & 3 on the Demnits project which my boss is having a look at as i type.
After working my ass off this week on catching up on exercises, this weekend is gonna be OH SO GOOD!!!
Well that pretty much sums up my week.
Its Frrrrrriday B-a-b-y

Week 20

This week I finished off the working drawings for the guest house my boss allowed me to help design... had so much fun with that project. I also went to drop the plans with the client in Woodstock for review.
We went to measure up the internet cafe in Vinyard Road next to Cavendish as well as the fire escape next to it.

The rest of the week I've been working on the Union Textile factory. I had to go do some check measurements on what they have already started building. A fire broke out in the factory next door so inspectors came around to check on it and saw that there was construction happening at the Union Textile. Now they really pushing to get plans because, the inspector said that there is no plans through council so they must stop until we are finished.
Its taking for ever to finish the plans because the factory is so big.

We that concludes my week,
Till next week
:)

Week 19

This week I finished the base drawing of the tricky office building we went to measure up which had no existing plans. It was a bit of a struggle but got it right in the end.
My boss has also allowed me to help design the guest house I am currently drawing up, which is the first project this year I am working on that is on a naked site :). There are quite a few different thing in it that you have to think about.
I also did some colouring in of plans this week which i haven't done in a while.
I took a set of plans which i had previously drawn up to council for scrutiny fees and approval. there was even a letter from the house owners association that had to he handed in with the plans to say that the bored has approved the plan too.
Other than that I have just been doing little alterations on a few of the older plans that I've worked on.

Week 18

Well it was a short week and this is gonna be a shorter blog entry...
This whole week I've been busy with the draughting of the offices we measured up last week.
We did go back for check measurements, because it is a very tricky building.
Otherwise I spent some time draughting site sections from a land surveyor and doing the sections of the new house that goes onto that.
Things have been so busy, but im trying to catch up on my projects and excersizes that i have fallen behind in.
Its coming along slowly but surely...

Week 17

Glad the blog is up and running again.
Right so, last week I started a working drawing for a new house, designed from scratch, which is my fisrt 1 this year so im quite happy about that.
Then most of my week was spent on doing changes on a office block in loop street. That was long, slow, annoying work because i had to realign the whole 5th floor with the engineers plans, because the the building was origionally drawn up incorrectly.
We also went to measure up an office block in Tokai which doesnt have any existing plans. I'm busy working on that at the moment.
And finally did a little work on changing notes in low cost housing plan.
Later..........

Week 16

It's been a refreshing week back at work this week.
Things that I've worked on this week in the office are:
I did the final layout of some of the low cost housing for 13 houses and there conservancy tanks.
We went to measure up an existing house in Pine Town for extensions under the external area and open patio.
I've been helping my work colleague on a steel framed structure above existing office blocks. Unfortunately i wont be able to put that into my portfolio though.
I got to work on my 3D structure for the camp sight a little bit but I'm going to have to change that now though. I'm also working on the final plans for that now...
Well thats all this short week :)

Thursday, April 21, 2011

Week 14

I did council changes for to sets of plans which was last minute changes that the clients wanted before the plans were submitted.
Most of my week was spent on drawing up another set of council plans for a holiday house in Kleinmond.
I also spent allot of time on making change to old plans that were for low cost, informal settlement housing, which is currently being constructed.
Not such an exciting week this week but at least I've got a little holiday coming up now. I took 3days leave and now I've got 11days to catch up on my collage work which I'm falling quite far behind in.
So i will be posting my next blog the week after next :)
Ciao...

Week 13

Me again... I'm almost finished with my first 3D on sketch-up, of the dam that is being converted into a braai lapa, toilet facilities and a washing up area for a camp site.
I completed draughting a set of council plans for a weird garage extension.
I did more working drawings the union textile factory of which one end of the factory is being split up into 3 separate sections to be rented out.
I did a working drawing of internal alterations for a house and they have been reviewed so now I'm currently busy editing it now.
We also went to measure up a house in Kenalworth very close to where i used to live. It proved to be a huge mission, because of the complexity of the design. I'm just so glad i don't have to draw up that base drawing :).
Till next time.............

Week 12

This week my boss was on holiday so my coworker and I had to run the hole office on our own. I must admit its was quite stressful. I did some admin this week which is a change. Other than that I draughted 2 new sets of base drawings.
We went to measure up the external measurements of the Hi-Fi corp. in Claremont as well as surveyed the existing fire and electrical fittings. Gee you know, electrical fittings.... in a Hi-Fi corp.... its a lot!!!
I couloured in quite a few sets of plans for council.
I helped I'm coworker with the working drawings for Arcadia center which needed to be completed by Monday morning.
I also drew up a few sections through a site to indicate the correct ground level from surveyors plans.
on top of that I'm busy working on an electrical layout for a house.
Busy busy week...

Monday, April 4, 2011

Week 11

Well last week was so busy that i didn't have time to do my weekly blog...
Here it is:
I spent the most of last week finishing little bits on allot of different plans before my boss left on holiday on Friday - like putting drawings in title blocks, working out coverage and putting colour onto drawings.
It was a good thing because then it would look better for my portfolio :).
I also when to measure up part of Kraaifontein Spar and Claremont Hi-Fi Corporation.
On top of that i had to go to council to retrieve plans for amendments and to get the scrutiny fees on the two sets of plans that are in my portfolio.

Week 10

This week was a good quick week thanks to the long weekend and a slightly lighter work load. I completed a working drawing for a campsite braai area, washing up area and toilets. The interesting part is that it was designed in and around an old concrete dam.
Wednesday I completed a set of working drawings for a odd shaped 66m² carport which was an extension to a house.
Yesterday was the most enjoyably work day though, because my boss allowed me to design and draw up braai areas for the campsite i worked on, on Tuesday. I had to design and position them on the sites and organize the rest of the individual site layouts. I also got to work on my sketch-up drawing for the Hoyle project.
I'm really stressed about the collage work now though because it is so unclear and in my opinion it is being communicated through to many different websites. it takes an hour just to go through everything to check for new posts every day.

till next week :)

Week 9

Gee this week has been extremely busy, especially because of the HUB design... so glad we get a long weekend now :) This week flew by faster than usual. I spent the majority of my working week drawing base drawings and colouring in plans for council. i did get to work on sketch-up a little though. and i finished the council plans for the doctors practice conversion.
i learned allot about stages and performing and layouts for the HUB design though. i just feel that i could have elaborated on the drawing more. i find it hard to put my mind on paper, but there is reasoning for everything so we see how it goes.
Till next week... ciao

Week 8

Hi again...
Gee, work is picking up even more now, its getting so busy my 'Mr. boss sir' is thinking of getting a new draughtsman in temporarily.
This week i draughted my first set of colour plans, it is just so much neater than using pencils.
well i did the usual, additions alterations and colouring the bigger drawings in.
I did enjoy doing an addition to chicken city in De Aar. The plans and design were interesting, its different to most of the other building i normally work on like the little drive-through with the layout of the areas inside.
Today I just finished the first set of plans for a private doctors rooms and that was also quit interesting due to the layout and the different functions of the rooms.
Well back to work now :)

Friday, March 4, 2011

Week 7

This week flew by so fast that I thought it was Thursday today. Well, I spent most of my time doing changes to plans this week ( 3 different houses).
Monday I worked on putting boundary walls around a site and did changes on a house.
Tuesday I made changes to the Paarl Transfer Station drawing I'd done previously and and drew up a base drawing of a new house, which was extremely confusing because I had to work off very old hand draughted plans that didn't really line up properly or measurements didn't add up.
Wednesday I made changes on an old set of plans and draughted  a staff room & ablution facilities onto the Paarl Transfer Station.
Thursday I started on council plans for the house i measured up in Paarl and on the same day changes came in for those plans so I edited that as well.
Today I'm making last minute changes to a set of plans which is being built and I finished the council plans that i started on yesterday but there are more changes on that, the owners want to extend their living area out and make that half glass panel walls and a glass double door. I must admit it is very interesting details.
Oki Doki thats all for now... enjoy the w-end :)

Friday, February 25, 2011

Week 6

Gee, this job really keeps me busy. I started and finished a set of working drawings on a house that I measured up in Paarl. It was mainly external covering of a carport and patio which was quite detailed due to the design and a small addition to a living room. On Tuesday we went to measure up the positioning of a swimming pool for a rider plan. I completed the base plans for the Paarl TF Station which we measured up last week. Then I was given a project to place low cost housing (in Betty's Bay) on there sites. It was interesting to see the different layouts and positioning. Yesterday I drew up a base bathroom layout for the inside to be re-done. I'm hoping that project comes my way again to complete when everyones minds are made up :)... And finally today I was told to start on a 3D presentation of a house in Newlands, I'm using sketch up to draw it up but probably a different program for more realistic rendering.
And now to end this weeks blogging off ------>
Its the week end baby........

Friday, February 18, 2011

week 5

This week I got a chance to leave the PC screen im glued to now days. I went to measure up three houses and the Paarl TF Station. Also I'm now working on a set of rider plans, extentions to one of the houses I measured up and drawing up plans for the Paarl TF Station. Its quite tough trying to juggle 3 different projects at the same time, but I'd say I'm coping pretty well. Otherwise time seems to be flying, the work keeps me so bussy. You know what they say, time flies when your having fun haha...

Week 1 - week 4

Getting settled
My first week at work was very interesting, meeting my colleagues and getting settled in. I had to learn a new draughting program that I've never worked on before (CADDIE). It is totally different from AutoCAD so I did struggle a little, but learned quickly.
After that, I got started with a project on factory alterations, which proved to be quite challenging because alterations and extensions are not my strong point. Never-the-less I finished it and learned quite a lot on just that project, so it was a good stepping stone.
There after I've been working on to projects simultaneously. They are both house addition projects, which are totally different to each other. I'm really enjoying both of them because of the different styles of housing.
Overall I think I'm starting to settle into the new office quite nicely now.
Catch up soon...

Tell my story

Hi all, I am Mr. Kyle Wentzel entering my first blog mail today. I will be telling you a little something about myself & how my architectural journey has laid out so far.

Throughout my school courier I moved often. We would be living in a different house every 6 months to a year. It was unsettling but at the same time I started studying house styles, forms, layouts, shapes and spaces. I would wonder how they were put together, how the junctions worked and how the detailing was done. This was just a contribution to my interest and inspiration towards architecture as it has always fascinated me.

When I had completed matric I couldn't apply to study architecture because of the moving situation. A last minute decision was made to move to Durban and I was to late to apply there. My mother told me about a 1 year architectural course through Inscape Design Collage, which luckily started in June. I didn't even think about it, I jumped at the opportunity immediately. So I moved back to Cape Town and passed the course with a distinction.

I knew I had to study further but had no idea on how to go about it. Work at a firm was very hard to come by, no one was employing a new candidate draughtsman. I applied to study through UCT but my school marks didn't allow for that. So I the mean time I had found a private job for a German client in Gaansbaai. I was lucky to be introduced to an architect in Hermanus who said he would sign my plans off for me and help me along the way. After that I met a developer, Mark Guthrie, who taught me allot about the industry. He always provided work for me to do of all kinds in my professional courier. The projects varied from new house design and extensions to model building and informal settlement housing.

Toward the end of that year I started thinking about bettering myself and furthering my studies. I applied at CPUT with very little hope of being accepted because I had been denied elsewhere before. I was so overwhelmed and surprised when I received my acceptance letter. My first year was interesting and hard all at the same time. I had no idea the work load would be so much, it really took all of my energy, time and concentration. I passed once again, finishing a few projects of my own on the side. It was extremely challenging trying to balance my life out.

Now I'm working at Oscar Schmidt Architecture as an intern for my second year of studies through CPUT. I have realized that its also about the journey to where and what you want to be and not just the destination. And... Well... Here I am and I will keep you updated from here onwards.
